A modern, intuitive platform that relies on barrier-free interfaces and says goodbye to media disruptions – the switch to NExt, the redesign of ExtraNet, the previous e-business platform, should open up these advantages for the Deutsche Bundesbank in future. This article shows what will change and how customers will benefit from optimized business processes via NExt.

What is NExt all about?

Until now, the Deutsche Bundesbank has used its own e-business platform ExtraNet to handle certain business processes. The new NExt concept is now intended to supplement the known functions and fundamentally expand the scope of possibilities. The aim is for NExt to provide a modern and intuitive portal in future.

To this end, the central bank is using a minimum viable product (MVP) to minimize risk factors and gradually develop the product further based on the feedback received. As long as the conversion of the individual departments to the new portal is ongoing, the Deutsche Bundesbank will continue to operate both systems in parallel.

In connection with this, the German Central Bank offers regular testings in which it presents and explains new features. We at ALVARA | Digital Solutions are also part of the test subjects and are already intensively testing the new portal.

Advantages of NExt

In addition to being easier to use and shortening processes, NExt should above all be clearer and customizable. To this end, information and functionalities are automatically adapted to users so that they correspond to their authorizations. The portal can also be customized in order to tailor the portal experience more precisely to the consumer.

Specifically, NExt offers a self-service and a user manager for user administration, convenient and accessible interfaces, modern and secure authentication methods, a dialogue function for communication directly in the portal and standardized interfaces (APIs) for automatic exchange. There are also notification calendars, to-do lists, e-mail notifications, information and regulations. Both the changeover and the expansion of the program are set out in a provisional timetable. The Deutsche Bundesbank has given itself until the end of 2026 to complete the changeover.

Standardized basic functions for different specialist areas

The basic functions include services that are required by a large number of users and therefore different specialist areas, while at the same time ensuring standardization. This means that external customers always have access to identical and standardized functionalities, despite different work areas.

For example, registration processes can be created by the users themselves. A company user manager is also responsible for administration. This user manager is also authorized for the work areas that the company releases. These areas allow access to one or more specialist topics, to which users are in turn assigned. The NExt authorization concept illustrates these steps.

The changeover to NExt

As those responsible are completely redesigning the registration process, users will have to re-register with NExt. Migration from ExtraNet to NExt is not possible. This applies to all departments. However, a new registration is sufficient for at least one subject area. It is then easy to add new specialist topics. In addition, the NExt service team informs the respective users in good time about the changeover. This means that a change can be made with sufficient lead time and preparation.

Important: Our ICC customers do not have to worry about registration. As with ExtraNet, NExt access is provided by ALVARA. There is therefore no effort involved.

Conclusion

From ExtraNet to NExt: users can look forward to a modern, intuitive and customizable platform. It will not only integrate all previous functions, but will also offer new, extended options in the future. A new concept that is worthwhile.
